What kudzu actually is on North Alabama ground

Kudzu is a three-leaflet vine. It smothers canopies, fence lines, and creek banks. Alabama Cooperative Extension is the statewide reference for how it grows: kudzu comes from seed and from root crowns. Follow a vine to where it roots. Dig a little and you will see buds and new sprouts at or just below the soil surface. That is the crown. The large woody root underneath is a storage organ. It does not sprout. You do not have to excavate the whole root to stop new growth — you have to deal with the crown.

Removing individual root crowns can suit a small patch or follow-up work. It is not the same as a forestry-mulching pass. Mulching opens the vegetation and leaves low stumps and roots in the ground; full stump and root-ball removal is work for a separate excavation contractor, not something I offer.

How to cut kudzu (what cutting and mulching do — and do not)

Cutting is real work. It is not the finish on a bank you cannot walk.

Sever vines at the base of keeper trees. Do not yank canopy vines you cannot see.

ACES: to stop new growth, cut just below the root crown and remove the crown. You do not excavate the entire storage root.

Repeated mowing can weaken a stand only if it removes most of the leaf area — ACES says more than 80 percent — every month of the growing season for years. Field-edge mowing fails if the vines originate outside the mowed strip. Dense mats hide stumps, ditches, logs, and wire. If you cannot walk it, you cannot hog it.

Forestry mulching grinds standing vines, brush, saplings, and small trees in place. The material stays as mulch. Stumps and roots remain, including kudzu root crowns. The aim is to make dense ground accessible for the next step, rather than promise eradication.

Kudzu treatment in Alabama

Opening the ground and controlling the regrowth are different tasks. Mulching removes standing vegetation. Longer-term kudzu control needs follow-up that addresses surviving root crowns and new growth. ACES: older crowns often need 3 to 5 years of treatment. No one-pass kill. Foliar window late summer through early fall. Do not treat in spring before leaves fully expand. When to hire kudzu removal

Hire when you cannot walk the stand, see the fence, or get a mower through it; vines in canopy of keeper trees; past a weekend of shovels; opening for pasture, access, Hunting land and food plots, or later Land clearing.

Forestry mulching does not include full stump and root-ball excavation, grading to a building specification, or hauling vines away. We do not promise a one-pass or guaranteed kill.
